I've heard of this before. This world is a trap to contain your soul. The Arhcons. Good as countless other concepts. makes sense. 
 

Archons in Gnosticism are believed to be celestial beings responsible for creating and maintaining the physical universe, and are seen as obstacles to spiritual enlightenment. They are often depicted as powerful, malevolent, and deceitful beings that try to keep humanity trapped in the physical world.  

I always try to stay assured. Broadcasting my optimism  to any evil Archons that may be lurking. Starving them and wasting their time for kicks. Them, trying to feed off my emotions like parasites. Knowing eventually the Karma will come for any self made enemies I may encounter.

I don't think those exist.

Nor do I think obsessive conscious attachments taken to your grave light a new candle of scripted recidivism in the next life.

And I especially don't buy an evil god Demiurge creates a false reality to trap souls forever in lower material forms... *eyeroll*.

People define the soul as "an immaterial, distinct, and often immortal part of a human that carries consciousness, identity, and individuality."

But... but... but... Mr. Religious Man, Sir, if people have these everlasting essences of self and identity, what's up with persistent vegetative states? Is the soul braindead and on a feeding tube too?

I think the only real "nightmares" happen when you're living and are largely self-created... but myth and persistent afterlife superstition still writes pretty cool songs to terrify people into cosmic fatalism... where natural codes of respect fail. 

It's worked for thousands of years, especially after they learned it's easier to terrify people into following specific words if you first convince them they live forever and will be punished eternally for disobedience..

You 'go into the light' only after you've refused. The way you do that is by not being seduced or terrified or angered into heading, instead, for one of the distractions being offered all around you amid the cacophony and disorientation of the immediate post-mortem experience. A Christian would call those distractions temptations, I suppose. 

I had a friend who got his friends to help him through the whole procedure specified in the Bardo Thodol on his deathbed. Didn't ease his dying, but I suppose the effect is supposed to kick in afterwards. I wonder...

I'll certainly hedge my bets and hope that there is something to come after this life...
 
And that I'm not judged too harshly for some of the things I've done in this one.  

The wonder part, i suppose, is what it's all about.
